STRONG FIELD
Madison, Connecticut
Creating A Civic Space
Over 14 years and 8 construction sequences, 1,000 donors raised $3.5 million dollars to create a Civic Space on Long Island Sound.
After 35 years the lighting, stands, field house and turf were essentially worn out of effective repair. Handicapped accessibility, the integration of women’s sports into Hall of Fame Recognition, code-complying bathrooms and a series of memorials for coaches, teams and residents make a civic space honoring the entire town that has over 300 events a year at part of the town beach.
Madison, Connecticut has 25,000 people, but its sports teams have won scores of State Championships, and was one of the first places in Connecticut to have night games - with a marching band of over 200. This 50-year tradition has meant that games at the town’s Strong Field can have 5,000 attendees, with thousands standing.
Two new field houses have ADA compliant bathrooms and locker rooms. TV screens, food concessions and Halls of Fame set facing the field where athletes on the field can face those who they aspire to honor. New stands are ADA compliant and doubled in size, a new scoreboard, and a new press box. Funding has been secured for a movable central stage facilitating plays and concerts.
The jewel in the crown of the complex is the Garrity Plaza where the town gathers at the central entry. Donors have recognition there, and the plaza is in full ascendance with new flagpoles and lighting. The architect donated his services.
